Intraoperative electron Radiation Therapy or IOeRT is state-of-the-art technology used to treat operable cancers during surgery with an electrons. This differs from traditional methods as the treatment is given in one sessions vs. 5 days per week for 5 to 7 weeks of traditional external beam radiation with the same re-occurrence rates and less side effects. IoeRT technology was proven in the 1960’s in a comprehensive test program in Italy. In the 1990’s new protocols and guidelines were established by ESTRO and ASTRO. IOeRT has proven itself for the local control of cancer and can be applied to all most solid tumors.
The LIAC (Light Intraoperative Accelerator) is a machine created after carefully analyzing requirements established by medical professionals in a surgical environment. The Liac is capable of being used in most operating rooms with no need for modifications of existing structures. Its 400kg (880lbs) weight makes it perfect for use on most floor types with no need for reinforcement. With its compact size (200x80x180 cm) and maneuvering capability it can be transported in normal elevators carrying stretchers.
The variable electron beam energy, up to 12 MeV, can satisfy almost any therapy requirements in under 2 minutes of treatment time. The LIAC system provides short and long term stability like conventional accelerators, and its electron beam means doses are precise and effective.
